Taranis
Taranis is a soil-conditioning musical instrument that integrates ritual practices with innovative renewable energy techniques to promote ecological renewal. Inspired by pagan harvest festivals, this device transforms nurturing the earth into a communal celebration, fostering sustainable relationships between humans and nature. Taranis generates and applies electrical energy to the soil, enhancing nutrient distribution, microbial activity, and nitrogen fixation processes. By intertwining rhythm, sound, and ecological functionality, it reimagines environmental care as a modern ritual.

Reviving the Earth with Rhythm, Ritual, and Renewable Energy
For the final prototype, the actual maypole ritual was performed with course members, to wrap the tube in colourful ribbons, keeping the symbolic background and integrating it into a visual narrative.
Due to its symbolic inspiration, the name given to the device was Taranis after the Celtic god of thunder, who is often illustrated with a wheel as one of his symbols. The wheel represents the sun, the cycles of the year, and the movement of storms. The connection to Taranis highlights the project’s focus on cyclical renewal and fertility, connecting the device’s energy generation to natural processes celebrated in Celtic festivals like Lughnasadh and Beltane. This naming choice adds a layer of cultural depth, strengthening the project’s narrative connections to ancient traditions.
