WUMA

Water Usage Measuring Apparatus

Wuma is a wrist worn water usage monitoring device designed to combat the overuse of freshwater. The base is a strap which connects to monitors on taps in houses and workplaces, and changes colour to subtly inform the user how far they are through their daily allowance. If the wastage continues, a hand apparatus is installed which limits hand movement as the user goes over their allowance. The design is sleek and minimal so when water is used efficiently, daily life is not affected. With changes to infrastructure, restaurants and bars will start including water usage on bills connected to the device, ensuring holistic and personal tracking.

The Project

By 2050, in order to support a growing population, the economy, food production and protect the environment, we are going to need a lot more water. Almost 5 billion litres a day. There are huge opportunities to use water more efficiently and stop the millions of litres of water being lost per day in our homes and businesses through leaking pipes, toilets, taps and urinals. Desalination and water recylcing may become viable in the future, but for now, we need to save the water we have.

We looked at different ways that people track the amount of water they use, and we wanted to be able to let people know in a more subtle way, rather than just a spreadsheet detailing numbers on their phones. We also wanted to add a provocative element of design, and looked back to our design for greater evil workshop, to see if any of the strategies used in that short project can be used for more extreme cases in London 2050

Creativity & Aesthetics

Throughout my bachelor’s studies, I have developed my expertise in Creativity & Aesthetics, which has been a significant strength and passion of mine throughout my design journey. I believe these areas are fundamental for any designer, as they allow for innovative problem-solving and leave a lasting impression on users. I have improved my ability to imagine and bring to life visually attractive and innovative designs. Through coursework and practical projects, I have explored different techniques and approaches to enhance the visual appeal of my creations.

Courses like Aesthetics of Interaction, Exploratory Sketching, Design and Sensorial Form and my Projects of which primarily my FBP, have helped me experiment with a range of materials, colors, textures, and forms, enabling me to create designs that evoke emotions and engage users on a sensory level. My portfolio showcases the evolution of my Creativity & Aesthetics expertise, highlighting my commitment to pushing design boundaries while maintaining a harmonious balance between form and function.

By combining my passion for creativity and a keen sense of aesthetics, I aim to create designs that inspire and seamlessly integrate into users’ lives. My work reflects my growth as a designer, demonstrating my ability to merge artistic expression with practical utility. As I embark on the next phase of my design journey, I am eager to explore new horizons in Creativity & Aesthetics, continually refining my skills and pushing the boundaries of design.
